The honest starting point

Senior living costs feel scary because the numbers are big and the language is unfamiliar. The good news: most families have more options than they realize — and a real conversation usually clears up most of the worry. Here’s what to know.

1. Private pay

The most common way Oklahoma families pay for assisted living and memory care is private pay — using income, savings, retirement accounts, and sometimes home sale proceeds. Communities usually bill monthly, similar to rent plus services.

2. Veterans benefits (VA Aid & Attendance)

Wartime veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for VA Aid & Attendance, which can help offset the cost of assisted living and memory care. Eligibility depends on service history, income, and care needs. We’ll help you understand whether it’s worth exploring.

3. Long-term care insurance

If your loved one has a long-term care insurance policy, it may cover part of assisted living or memory care. Policies vary widely — what’s covered, the elimination period, and the daily benefit are the things to look for.

4. Bridge funding options

Some families use short-term bridge loans, life-settlement options, or proceeds from selling a home to cover initial costs while they wait for other funding to come through. These tools come with trade-offs — we can point you toward people who specialize in them when relevant.

5. What Medicare and Medicaid do (and don’t) cover

Medicare generally does not pay for long-term assisted living or memory care. It may cover short-term skilled care after a hospital stay. Medicaid may help with nursing home care for those who qualify financially, but coverage for assisted living through Medicaid waivers varies and is limited.
